Summary of Consulting Opportunity
Nearly 30 million households and more than 100 million Nigerians depend on wood as a source of fuel for cooking. Smoke from open fire result in over 95,000 deaths annually; after Malaria and HIV/AIDS it is Nigeria’s biggest killer. Moreover, the traditional cooking method is expensive, burning up to 90% more wood than is necessary and costing poor families money that could be put to better use on education, health and nutrition. The use of firewood also contribute to deforestation and climate change.
Despite the benefits of clean cookstoves, the market to supply them is undeveloped in Nigeria. This stems from both policy and market failures: a lack of education about the benefits of clean cookstoves, weak government policies, poor stove quality and insufficient access to finance.
The Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is a public-private partnership to introduce 10 million clean cookstoves to Nigerian homes and institutions by 2020. The Nigerian Alliance seeks to achieve this outcome through the following activities:
a. Policy: Work with Federal and State Governments to develop policies to support the clean cookstove and fuel market; b. Quality Certification: Work with research centres, stove companies, Standard Organisation of Nigeria and the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves to ensure that only high quality clean stoves are certified for the Nigerian market; c. Financing: Structure finance models so that Nigerians can afford to buy clean cookstoves; and d. Advocacy: Communicate the value of fuel-efficient stoves at the grassroot.
The Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is an affiliate of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. The Global Alliance works closely with the Nigeria Alliance in facilitating the growth of the clean cookstoves market in Nigeria. The Nigeria Alliance is the in country representative and the Market Development Manager will serve as the main point of contact for Global Alliance activities on the ground in Nigeria.
