UN Climate Chief Says Nigeria’s Climate Action Can Unlock Growth and Prosperity

The United Nations Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell, has emphasized that Nigeria’s commitment to climate action presents a significant opportunity for economic transformation and sustainable development. Speaking at the Intersecting Worlds of Climate Change, Mangrove, and Art Symposium in Lagos on March 6, 2025, Stiell highlighted the country’s vast clean energy potential, including solar, wind, and critical minerals, as key drivers for green growth. He also stressed that Nigeria’s ambitious climate policies, such as its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, could supercharge economic growth, create jobs, and provide clean energy access to millions.

Acknowledging Nigeria’s leadership in climate initiatives, Stiell pointed out that despite limited international support, the country has made significant strides toward sustainable energy solutions. He noted that expanding clean energy, investing in sustainable agriculture, and prioritizing climate-resilient infrastructure could unlock billions in investments while mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. He also underscored the role of Nigeria’s extensive mangrove forests in protecting communities from coastal erosion and climate-related disasters, advocating for greater investment in conservation efforts.

However, Stiell emphasized that Nigeria could not undertake this transition alone and called for increased international climate financing. He urged developed nations to scale up support, ensuring Nigeria and other developing countries can access necessary funds for climate adaptation and resilience. Highlighting Brazil’s commitment to boosting global climate finance ahead of COP30, he reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to working alongside Nigeria in implementing bold climate policies that will drive economic and environmental sustainability.
